Last year I decided to get my act in gear & finally get round to starting my own book club. It’s one that is pretty much done online via Facebook alone due to where everyone is based. I called it ‘Tale away with me’… sadly I can’t take credit for the name, creative rights go to my husband!
During the year we read a variety of books & the aim was just to get people reading again, talking about it & maybe even dabble in a book or two you wouldn’t normally read!

Books we read last year included:
He said/she said by Erin Kelly
Island of secrets by Patricia Wilson
Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman
The Outside by Stephen King
Paper Ghosts by Julia Heaberlin
Diary of a Haunting by M Verano
So as you can see, quite a variety! Have you read & enjoyed any of the books I’ve mentioned? Get involved in the comments & let me know!
So after October the book club just came to a halt with people not able to commit due to time/money/interest etc…
A little bit disappointing but I know it happens!
Anyway, it’s a new year & I feel like whether it’s a good time for me personally that it would be great to get it up & running.
The way I work it at the moment is to pick 4 books a month (all different genres) and ask the group to vote. On the back of this the book with the most votes is our book for the following month. When the time comes to start sharing our thoughts on the book we head to the event page (to try & prevent spoilers for those that haven’t quite finished) and have a quick chat about it!
Despite all the best intentions in the world, I’m struggling to get people engaged in this bit, and surely other than reading the book this is meant to be the icing on the cake so to speak!?
For those of you in a book club or that run one, do you have any advice on how to get people more engaged? Sometimes I’ll post questions to initiate parts of the conversation, other times I’ll leave it open for them to lead with their review of the book & branch from there… what do you find works for you in your opinion?
Any help is much appreciated! I love reading and really part of that love is chatting with someone afterwards about the book & reaping the rewards of finishing it!
If you’ve stuck with the post this far, thank you ☺️ we’ve completed our first vote for 2019 & the group have voted to read Eve of Man by Giovanna & Tom Fletcher. (One I’m really excited to read)
If you would like to join in, you can find the group on fb or Instagram & request to be part of the group!
I hope you’re all having a great start to your week!
